After just over a year of faithful service, my line was cut on next year's budget. I've just been told that December 31st will be my last day. I will be receiving severance pay, but only due to the absolute insistance of my boss. He basically told me, "Be here, don't be here, use our stuff, print out resumes, make phone calls... whatever. This blows."
So I've basically got 2 and a half months to find something before I start eating into my savings.

Yah... it was purely a budget cut thing. I'm still jobless though.
I've got a couple of leads, and I've got two months to figure something out. But I'm not going to wait. Bad thing is... noone's going to be talking about hiring this close to the end fo the year.

Two months severance!?! Holy shit! That's a really great deal your boss struck for you.
While getting laid off sucks no end, New Years is the best time (statistically speaking) to get a new job: companies are looking to make a fresh start and often have fresh budgets to hire new people with.
Bites that they should tell you before Christmas...to make your season bright, of course.
I've heard of two other people I know online getting hose the same way- no severence for them however.

Ya, my boss really went to the mat for me. And it's a lump sum counted as seveance, not continued employment, which means on January 1st, he's gonna start loking for ways to hook me up with freelance work. Also means I get to keep the scratch even if I get another job immediately.
I hadn't thought about the new year being a good time ot look for work. Problem is these next two weeks are going to be almost impossible to get an interview, even if I get people to agree to see me. I'll have to set stuff up in January.

So take a week off as vacation to gain some perspective on things and then get crazy updating portfolio pieces, your webpage and resumes.
...or blow the entire severance on booze, hookers and twinkiis, skip town, change your name and hit the road turing America, working odd jobs to pay for gas and lodging....
Could be an intresting year if you play your cards right.

My condolences. I just recently stopped being unemployed. At least you've got a decent boss helping you out. Beats the hell out of a security guard watching you clean out your desk to make sure you don't steal any pencils.
