Charles, I apologize in advance if this violates the UA, but this is the only thing I can think of.
I have a friend in Canada...in Toronto, in fact. She recently moved out of an apartment with a psycho roommate & is in the process of getting her own place.
HOWEVER!!...She was dumped by her boyfriend not a week ago, one who had promised to pay her security deposit of $400. That's Canadian dollars, mind you). He is now reneging on that deal & this leaves her effectively HOMELESS if she does not have that money by 7:30 AM EDT Wednesday, 26 April. She loses the apartment & has nowhere to live.
She's not a bad person & has struggled hard to get where she is. She works 3 jobs, is putting herself through the last year of high school in a Catholic school--paying her own way--& plans to attend university.
SO....I turn to you, members of Flare, & beg upon the possibility for you to help a person in need, one who you do not know & will most likely never meet. She has a Paypal account (accessable with the username/email [email protected]) & I'm asking people to donate even a little bit. She would not let me do this, refused it unless she was allowed to repay the amounts in installments, "as much as I can, a minimum of ten dollars a month, and we get it in writing. Canadian dollars though, because the exchange rate is rape for me. The first to donate will be the first in line for repayment. I hope that's alright, but if I have to do it all at once I'm fucked."
Yes, I have added my small bit. Not a lot, but it doesn't have to be. By replying that you have contributed something, you are agreeing to the terms above: that she will repay you at that rate as she can. I don't think she'd let anyone give her the money, so...don't even bother.
Seems strange for me to have the altruistic side, but I've needed help before & people have come. I'd like to give return that. Thanks, folks.

If she's living in her own place -- much less *was* living with her boyfriend -- I'm guessing she's over 18. Incidently, what Catholic school would be happy with an unmarried student shacking up with her guy?

Hahaha...no, really. There no interest here except altruism. hwen I was homeless & down on my luck for 3 weeks, lots of people cvame to my aid, including Snay & Ritten & a few others who I'm a little too tired to remember at the moment. When I lost my job a few months later, my now-girlfriend bought me tons & tons of food after knowing me for only 2 or 3 weeks. Pip has...well..no one. And she's had a hard life that I don't really want to go into because it's not my place (but to allay curiosity, think of the worst like a girl in Canada could have, then tack on a little more), so...there's really NO support system. This was all my idea, & as I said, she insists on repayment. So.
Also, tim? The last time I talked to a high school girl was Saturday night, when LizKing bitched me out for not answering my phone. (I was at work). Now she's in Poland for a week & the last I heard was a text from her saying "I saw a bitoech poster! I'm in hella Chicago!"

Hmmm...have you tried official channels to assist her? I'm not at all sure what's available in canada or your particular area but there are boarding and crew houses all over here (Ft Lauderdale) with cheap rent (but lots of roomates). Also there are food assistance programs that she may qualify for.
Even if she comes up with the money for the deposit, can she really afford to live there on her own? If so, there are (again here) Paycheck Advance places that will loan up to $500 against a person's next paycheck (she would have to a;ready have a checking account and a steady job, naturally). Usually it's a $50 fee when the loan is repayed.
And there's always the old Pawnshop route to temporary cash.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Jason, in the last five yers I've been evicted, shared a one-bedroom apartment with three roommates while nearly all of my worldly possessions were in storage, had my car stolen (along with a load of stuff for storage), been occasionally homeless, and been through the ins and outs of federal, state, and local assistance programs in California, Nevada, and Washington. And if it weren't for the kindness and generosit of friends and family, I would probably be dead long since.
Currently, I'm staying in my parents' guest quarters, and if I weren't, I'd be screwed. Medicaid is covering most of my medical expenses. My parents are covering the rest. The State of Washington is paying me $339 a month -- which they say iss supposed to be enough to cover my monthly financial needs. Yeah, right. Average rent for a place approximately the size I'm living in right now around here is more than three time that. Most of what I'm getting goes straight to my parents anyway.
And I originally applied for Social Security back in October, was declined, and have appealed -- and still have another month or two before I can expect a decision. All the local food banks I've ever seen don't have a lot of healthy food, either.
So. Yeah. The system's fucked. The charities don't have enough money, and it often comes down to us to support our fellow humans.

P.S. I'd like to thank Dan, Brian, and Kirt; as well as Billy and Sharmiri. They saved my life the second time round (I won't talk about the first...).

Did you know, I was born in Detroit?
Jonah, you're not doing so great, but at least you have some assistance and support network (friends/family/sock puppets/Voices) to help you. Think how hosed you'd be without those: I been there and back.
Still, it's a life less ordinary, right? Adversity (and physical pain) colors one's perspective in a zen-like way after a while.
I'M A FUCKING ZEN MASTER, BITCHES!

My mom was born in Detroit, too. Harper Hospital. Good chunk of that branch of my ancestry worked for Ford, so they mostly lived in Dearborn (back when it wasn't semi-ghetto).
*aside* How did he know about my sock puppets...?

I was a national guard recruiter at the DLGA for a stint... Then the damn goverment didn't approve that budget in '95, thus the need to hatchet the lowest man on the totem.
