Candians Lack Americans' drive, researchers find
by Ian Karleff, Buffalo News

TORONTO - Canadians, always in the shadow of their U.S. neighbors, lack American entrepreneurial drive and their 'emotional intelligence' is lower, researchers said Thursday.
Canadians score lower than Americans in assertiveness, happiness, optimism, the ability to be realistic, and social responsibility, said Dr. Steven Stein, psychologist and president of the research company Multi-Health Systems.
Emotional intelligence, know as EQ, is defined as the ability to be aware of and control emotions, get along with others, manage stress, adapt to change and maintain a positive mood. Stein studied the responses of 4,000 Canadians and Americans to determine a median score of 100. Americans scored 103 and Canadians scored 95.
In the test for assertiveness, Americans scored 104, Canadians only 97. That indicates Canadians are more polite, quieter, less patriotic and more inclined to keep their thoughts to themselves, Stein said.
Assertiveness was deduced by asking respondents to rate on a scale of one to five how closely they agreed with statements such as, "If I disagree with somone I am able to tell them" and "It's fairly easy to express my feelings."
"The defining reason for the difference is we are less entrepreneurial than Americans," said Canadian-born Stein.
A surprising finding in the study is that Americans are more socially responsible. "It could be that as individuals(Canadians) pass that on to governments and institutions, whereas Americans seem to take it on themselves," said Stein.
Canadians have socialized medicine and welfare, so they may feel they don't have to help others as much on an individual basis, he said.
Canadians also scored lower than Americans in happiness and optimism, even though Canada have been rated by the U.N. as the best country in the world to live in for the past six years.
"We just don't celebrate as much as Americans," said Stein.

I must diligently point out that things like this start the all-evil things (stereotypes)... such as the arrogant U.S. tourist.

I also find the happiness point interesting... I would never have guessed that, actually... I find it rather peculiar.

If I didn't love visiting Canada so much, I would probably say that Canadians suck. But that might just be because I watched the South Park movie last week.

No seriously, Canadian people rule. I would trust myself walking through Toronto more than Boston anyday.

*Canadian*... Nyah!

All I have to say is this: Canada rules. B.C. rules even more. And Vancouver is the best place to live in the world! Smile

Evil Smile I've gotten soooo many people jealous over my city.....Charles Cappy for example... Envies my BCTel's ADSL web access service, because it's twice as fast and three times less expensive. And that's in Canadian dollars. *LOL*

Many people envy the fact that we get CONSTANT showings of ST:TOS, ST:VOY, ST:TAS (The Animated Series!), and ST:TNG, daily. Many people also envy the fact that we get routine showings of those old Sci-Fi classics like Doctor Who, Voyage to the bottom of the sea, Lost in space, you name it. We got Classic Sliders and the new Sliders, we got the X-Files, we got south park, B5, Crusade (B5 related), Lexx the series.....tons of classic Sci-Fi movies daily......we got it all here, as far as TV goes. Bwahahah. Some people would kill to see one showing of one of the above. *eyes Charles*

I have to admit... I've found it strange that I get more Star Trek at home than when I was in Nevada or New Hampshire for instance. Strange, isn't it?

Well...because of my job, I get to talk to lots of Canadia folk...heheheh. I told them about the article, and they told me that Canadians are so complacent because they're always drinking...And after that, they continued to chug their Molson and Labatts...

Go figure!

*snort*

As a British Columbian from the other part of the province (the part most Vancouverites didn't know existed, or at least lumped in with Alberta and that Winnipeg place and Nuna-wha?, I can tell you flat out Vancouver is hardly the greatest place on earth. Well, I suppose it'd be great if you were a cantonese-speaking duck. The incessant rain would be nice, and considering nearly 40% of the city speaks Cantonese as its first language, the city of incessant fog'd be perfect.

And now for a rant about BCTel. Thanks to their great service in the interior, my 56k modem chugs along at 36 because their freaking lines are crap and they won't update them. Hopefully once the Albertans move in this Sept and take over, the insane long distance rates will drop and perhaps their network will improve.

Don't get me started on the losers that Vancouver is largely responsible for installing into the provincial legislature. Between the Neo-Facsist "Liberal" party who sing songs of the good ol' days when "clearit-logit-paveit" ruled the BC forest industry and there was money enough for all; and the NDP, the Political Wing of the Labour Union Republican Army; BC is just set...

*is dragged kicking and screaming off the Officer's Lounge by those who wish this board to be a happier place*
