So I installed Windows on the first master HDD, *after* installing Linux on the first slave. I know, wrong order, but I hadn't intended to even install Windows on this PC until my friend gave me Diablo II: LoD. Anyway, now Grub's telling me that my partiton with Linux on it (/dev/hdb2, or hd1,1 in Grubspeak) doesn't exist. Yikes. Anyway, I tried running grub-install on the thing from a livecd and no beans. I'm gonna try jumpering the slave to master and vice versa, but I highly doubt it will affect anything. Any other ideas are appreciated. Oh, and Cartman, thanks in advance, I know you'll reply with sage advice. (-_-)

But apart from that, if grub-stage1 wasn't nuked by your installing Windows on hd0.0 (assuming you didn't erase any existing partitions first), then the MBR must still be intact, and I don't really know why it would whine about not finding hd1.1 since none of your /dev/hdb partitions should have been touched at all. You might perhaps have killed its second-stage loader (if it was on hd0, which I doubt), but... meh.
Some questions:
1) What's the boot order of your drives? Master -> Slave or Slave -> Master? 2) When you installed Windows, did you wipe the drive clean and create a new partition, or did you dump it on a pre-existing one? If the latter, which? 3) Why do you have Ubuntu's boot partition on hdb2 instead of hdb1 like normal people? B) 4) I'd ask you to post /boot/grub/menu.lst, but, well... 5) Can you start Windows?
Anyway, the next time grub drops you into its prompt, try entering:
root (hd1,1) setup (hd0)
Then launch a few magic missiles.

I knew I could count upon your swift and speedy reply.
Its Slave -> Master; I wiped the slave clean and reformatted; its on hdb2 cuz hdb1 is my swap; I can start Windows; and I can post menu.lst if I reboot with a liveCD which I'll do in a little bit. But first to try your grub-prompt stuff.

LiveCD's are awesome as hell. Whoever came up with that idea was a fucking genius. I've made about ten of them from different Linux OS's in the past few days. I'm using one called Morphix right now.
So far, I'm partial to PCLinuxOS and Myah. I primarily use them for internet surfing purposes, which is incredibly convenient when I'm wading through all that porn late at night and not having to worry about viruses.

I have a dedicated Linux box that I don't care about so I can fiddle with it without worrying about killing anything important. Linux just isn't quite ready for "prime-time" users. And I don't have the time to dedicate to learning all the fiddly intricacies of it.

"I wiped the slave clean and reformatted..."
Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait... you mean the master, right? Because...
quote: So I installed Windows on the first master HDD...
... would seem to dispute that. But obviously, if your hd1 stuff is still there, it's just grub that isn't seeing things straight. And I don't blame it. B)

Right, I wiped the *master*. Which would explain, come to think of it, what the hell happened. *coughs uncomfortably* Anyway, I got rather caught up in Diablo II last night and neglected to try grubbin from the grub shell (I just love the word grub) but in any case, is there any way to install grub on the MBR of hd0, but stick the boot images on hd1,1?

Yes, and that just happens to be what those nice commands in my previous post are for. B)

Qa'Bah! My druid was bear-mauling reavers, manhandling Baal and "stay a while and listen"-ing Kain while you where jacking off to mom's lingerie-magazine.
(LoD is great game, a nice choice. Not terribly taxing on the comp, tho, you could prolly easily swing "Neverwinter Nights" or "Fable", if you're at least above the 1GHz-mark.)
