Wonder what happens if they bring along a young baby Jesus. Free perfume, incense, and a gold-plated commemorative watch, perhaps?

Joseph and Mary were married when they stayed in the inn, TSN. That's why she had to come with him for the census instead of go with her father.

As far as I can tell, most translations of Luke 2:5 say that Joseph and Mary were "engaged" or "betrothed" or some other version of "not quite married yet".
Not to mention that the whole census story was an anachronism shoe-horned into the story to move Jesus' birth into Bethlehem in an attempt to match up with vague ancient prophecies.

It meant something different at the time. To be betrothed then wasn't just to be engaged - you couldn't just break it off. It would be as severe as getting a divorce. As I understand it, it was like being married as far as 'property' goes, but you didn't live together or have sex yet.
(And it doesn't matter whether it's true or not - I don't mean to give the impression that it was. The point is if they're going to match up with the story, then what, precisely, is the story?)
