I just defended my Master's thesis! Come May, I'll have an MS in electrical engineering.

Kudos. I hope all the other BScs here will join me in a slight envious scowl.

Having not gone to a real college myself (art school you know) what does it mean to defend one's thesis? Was your thesis attacked? Perhaps by a horde of large breasted Norwegian women wielding battle axes?

Now why the hell would he want to do that? I tried that for a year, and it sucked. So I promptly when back to Uni to get my Doctorate.
Congrats Omega! You will shortly have very similar academic credentials to myself (MEng Electrical and Information Sciences, think a cross between EE and CompSci)

Almost time to go home!
I guess it is where you are interrogated on what you said in your thesis, and the interviewer will try to prove your ideas wrong, and you must defend the ideas and further prove your point. I think that is how it is at least. I still have a few good years untill college.

He had started his MSc with the intention of continuing to a PhD, and that's what the uni figured he was going to do as well... but then he got into it and really didn't like it. At least, that's what he told me a while back...
Me, I'm still another year or so away from my BScE... not going for a masters just yet...

In 2005, when I defended my thesis for an MS in Mechanical Engineering, I pretty much presented an oral version of my written thesis in front of my graduate committee; two professors from the Mechanical Engineering Department and one from the Chemical Engineering Department. Two of the three had actively participated in my experimentation (we did gas turbine efficiency studies) and had helped me refine my thesis beforehand. After my presentation, the three asked me questions, the hardest coming from the professor who hadn't participated in the research. It wasn't really confrontational; I wasn't defending the thesis as if it were being attacked or criticized. I don't think any self-respecting graduate adviser would allow his or her student to go into the defense unprepared or with a seriously flawed thesis.

Mine was similar, but with only my two adviser profs. A staff engineer who had effectively defined the project was in there too, and actually helped answer some questions. I suspect they have thesis defenses in order to ensure you actually wrote the paper and do in fact know something about the subject.
