Yes, they did that, and it was true. They also did one based on the popular cartoon gimmick of a child holding a bunch of party balloons and floating away. If I remember correctly, it took around 3500 balloons to lift a 4-year-old girl.

That was another myth, something about carnival balloons and a small child. This one was done in an earlier show, where they place Adam in a lawn chair and lift him with weather balloons. He was equipped with a bb pistol to shoot the balloons and lower his altitude.
