The Blue Danube, I believe. I haven't seen it in years. I heard it was to be released to theaters again, but none showed it here. It played one night at the State College theater, but I couldn't go.

There are two main songs in 2K+1, composed by two unrelated(?) guys named Strauss. The mellow waltzy one is The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss, while the groovy dum dum one at the opening is Thus Spake Zarathusta(sp?) by Richard Strauss.

This being my favourite film, I feel qualified to reply. That version of the Blue Danube is the best I've ever heard, and was conducted by Herbert Von Karajan. There's more good stuff in the film. . . the eerie choral music that accompanies the monolith is by Gyorgy Ligeti (who also did the music used during the Trip through the Star Gate), while the beautiful music that accompanies the first appearance of the Discovery is Katchachurian's Gayane Ballet Suite.

Anyway, lest we all think Jay is some sort of freakish prodigy, we should know that he, like, studies historical sheet music or something. Yeah, I know, all that California sun and what does he do with it?

My research has been into 19th century sheet music from the 1850's and 60's so that was of little help here. Joplin came to me from my love of Jazz and Blues. He as the person who made ragtime what it was and reinvented the way that piano was played.
The other two were were just a mouse click away. The Internet Movie Database is a garden of eden for such movie trivia.

If you want to sound even smarter, you can refer to the 2001 theme by it's original German title, "Also Sprach Zarathustra"... :-)
