Actually, Dutch is a Germanic language. Of course, it isn't the same thing, especially when you recall that English and Flemish are also Germanic languages and neither of those sounds a bit like "Deutsche".
I have heard that Flemish is actually quite similar to Old English.
But yes, there are some words in English that have changed in other languages like Dutch. Dutch for knife is now mes - which looks like the German word Messer. but the old Dutch word for knife (about 1400 or thereabout) was knive. This had me raise an eyebrow when I read it in a text.
