With apologies to Beck for stealing the subject line.

I think I'm the last person on Earth to upgrade ICQ. Hey, I'm thinking, I don't want to lose my contact list. Sounds reasonable. But due to a number of convincing arguments over the past few months, I've finally decided to do it.

Enter the first circle of hell. Make a copy of your database folder, it says. Righto. It's just too bad that it didn't mention what to do after that. ICQDBConverter? Sure, why not? Oh, because even after running it the thing still doesn't have a list?

Not that it even bothers to connect in the first place, mind you. So I suppose I'm not really missing out on anything.

I'm still anxiously awaiting the advent of unlimited message length. That alone will be worth all this. Assuming it ever works.

I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if I had...oh, I don't know, email perhaps? A sum total of one message has gotten out in the past several weeks, and none have come back through. Wait, wait, I'm forgetting the messages from [email protected], letting me know what a great stock tip she's got for me over at cheapstockripoffs.com. Thank you oh so much, "Jaane". Nice name you've got there.

While we're on the subject of misbehaving internet things, I'm also amazed at how many Usenet posts make their way to the local server. Two whole posts? In one rec.arts category? Goodness, such technological progress is utterly mindboggling!

But I'm not bitter. Oh no, I reserve that for my Drama class, which I have oh-so cleverly avoided taking a test in. Good job, me!

What's this? ICQ actually works? Well, paint me red and call me a yield sign. Will wonders never cease?

I only upgraded so I could use ICQ Plus and put a
picture of Shirley Manson as my ICQ background :P

The Database thing didn't work at first, but it
eventually did. Not sure what I did different to
get it to work though.

I never had any of those problems. When I installed the newer version, it automatically converted my old database foe use with the new version.

Go fig. Maybe ICQ just likes my creaky, senile old computer?

BTW, Congratulations on your ultimate success, Sol.

I just sent you an E-mail, Sol. Let me know here if you don't get it.

So, I had a lot of problems, getting kicked off line, with ICQ, so I dumped it a few months ago. Is it time to get back in??

ICQ99 sucks. I got it once a long time ago when it was in Alpha testing.....did NOT like what I saw....so I've been using ICQ98 ever since. In fact, I'm thinking of downgrading to ICQ...*LOL*

Kosh: I got it, and I've sent a response. We'll see if it makes it out alive.
