Or at least the PM did up to the time of Margaret Thatcher -- the article I found is rather old.

Isn't 10 Downing Street, the home of the British PM, kind of a dump?

Dreadful!

P.S.: Is it still a dump or have they remodelled it since Maggie departed?

*SMITE!*

The home of the First Lord of the Treasury is as fine an official residence as they come!
At least he doesn't live in a silly whitewashed mansion . 8P

You'll have to smite harder than that to get through all the fur.

I've noticed that the Queen seems to live in a rather nice abode. Of course, if we made the presidency an underpaid job with poor housing, it might attract fewer opportunists and more people who really wanted to get the job done right.

If we could do that with congress, it would work wonders. Of course, since they vote their own pay raises and so forth, I don't know if we could work it. Perhaps if we pushed for an amendment that made the states that elected them responsible for their upkeep? This would certainly make them a bit more responsive to the folks back home. Of course, getting it to pass would be a bit problematic.

$36,000 per annum? That can't be right, I'm sure it's gone up. *I* make more than that!
