A couple of high profile mistakes have made the news recently, sometimes you really have to shake your head and wonder who's running the place
1. The Mars Climate Orbiter recently disappeared, apparently it dropped out of orbit after travelling for nine months through space, burning up in the Martian atmosphere. The problem? NASA was sending instructions to the probe for its rocket firings in the old English units of feet per second, but the probe's computers were calibrated in metric units, and interpreting the instructions as Newtons/second. Result: $125 million shooting star that nobody saw.
2. A guy goes to a hockey game at Air Canada place in Toronto and leaves his briefcase in the backseat of his car. Some drug addicts looking for money for their next fix break into his car and steal the briefcase. Problem: This guy happens to work for CSIS (Canadian Security and Intelligence Service), and this briefcase happens to contain top secret papers detailing planned CSIS operations for the next year. Apparently the addicts, not finding any money, threw the briefcase into a dumpster, which was later emptied, briefcase and all. And the politicians in Ottawa wonder why the Americans always hesitate before sharing information with them.
