UM: It's his generalizations that I don't like. It seems that he is not aware of any other form of liberalism other than his own. Same with Rush's comment.

Ah, but since we're discussing US politics, is it not reasonable to assume that we're talking about US liberals?

It would be nice if you refered it as "American Liberalism". Liberalism on its own has many different meanings in our world.
That comment you made in response to BlueElectron was out of line. I don't even think BlueElectron is American. I may be wrong so I'm sorry.
Another thing is that not all Liberals (American included) act the way you think. It would be best that you try to identify who you are actually referring to instead of painting all Liberals with the same (unfair) label.

Just use American Liberal Socialists (Henceforth to be known by their new nickname, "Alibis"): ie: the general leadership and hardest-driving special-interest groups behind the Democratic party.

I don't see how budgets would have to be slashed to come in under the Bush proposal. Seems a no-brainer to me.
If you're spending $100 (the budget) but collecting $200, (the surplus) and refunding, oh, say $75 of that $200, (the tax cut) you're still at $125, which leaves you $25 ahead. (the 'buffer zone')

Since this was originally about, "Why are the Dems doing this" the answer is that they, like most politicians, must appeal to the masses -- in this case, tailoring a tax plan similar to the Republican plan.

Provided that the figures are true. A tax cut would be fine as long as (and I keep saying) they are not off the backs of the lower class (by not cutting the services that they rely on the most).

The figures for the surplus SHOULD be true.. they're the same ones the Democrats were trying to take credit for a year ago...
I dunno about you, but the service most middle-and-lower-class people I know rely upon most is a job and a salary.
More untaxed wealth = more spending = more production = more jobs = less unemployment = higher wages/benefits.
And another thing. It's occurred to me that if there were less Federal taxes, people might be less inclined to be against smaller LOCAL taxes like the kind that support libraries and schools.
