Well, a year after i found this out, i'm finally posting it.......
Last summer i had a real professional writer as a teacher in my writing class. He was a star trek fan himself, and once wrote a script for TNG. This story was about some type of elite marine like group. However, the story was never turned into an episode. Just thought u might want to know that there almost were starfleet marines.

There ARE Starfleet marines. Or rather, there is a specialized ground force that uses a different uniform. (Though apparently shares the same rank structure.)

Also, in Waltz, the Defiant escorts a convoy of 30,000 Federation soldiers.
