For those who like to have real world comparisons and historical lineages (ex. schooner USS Enterprise to USS Enterprise E) for their Federation ships, here is the history of the USS Neptune. In this article, we learn of civilian runned USN ships, modifications made to different ships in a class, name changes, and the like. Enjoy. (In Star Trek, Neptune is a surveyor ship and is the prototype for the Neptune Class. In Star Trek: The Adventure, a USS Neptune was one of the ships destroyed at Wolf 359.)
