In the TNG episode, we learn of the "new and improved" warp drive which actually isn't warp drive but the Traveller using his powers. When the Enteprise first "jumps to warp" they end up in this faraway galaxy. They try to jump back to the Milky Way but are now in this weird dimension where thoughts become reality. Did the Traveller actually bring them to this weird dimension first, the galaxy scene being an illusion caused by their thoughts?

One might say that the first success raised the subconscious expectations of the crew, so their thoughts gave that much more boost the second time around, and thus surprised even the Traveller...
