Only downside is that they're actually replacing footage of the actors in the establishing shots with the new CGI. The first time they've cut any episodes like that. It's a bit of a pity that they're doing that, and to be honest, I don't really understand the reasoning behind it. You'd think they could just plonk the CGI establishing shot before the original version.
Bleh, anyway, it looks great and I love the TAS/TSfS/TVH cross referencing.

Well if you look, you'll see the original shot of them walking up wouldn't match the new matt painting and I imaging it would be unnecessarily labour intensive to rotascope the actors against a new back drop. I think the new wide shot is a fair trade for the original.

Dont worry too much about them replacing actors- the fight scene between Kirk and Spock still features an obvious stuntman as Spock.
The new CGI arean makes alot of sense to me- it both matches the other views of Vulcan and allows for the featureless red backgrounds (as thy're so high up there is only red sky!). Smart thinking.

Well like Jason says the new CGI shots seem to account for the plain red backdrops, so the shots of the cast walking into the arena might've still been viable left unchanged. Anyway, I'm not too bothered about it.. there's not even any dialogue.

It's not the backdrop that would have given it away, it's the terrain. Either way I'm reasonably sure they have to keep the length of the show down, so any new footage must not add to the overall length of the show. Hence the old shot is replaced instead of supplemented.
