I compiled this list with help from Star Trek.com and my notes. If the information is from the notes, the item is marked by an asterisk (*). And if an item is marked by a succeeding number, there is a note at the bottom of this page.

Star Trek (1966 to present)
1.) James T. Kirk
->Riverside, Iowa, USA, Earth
2.) Spock
->Shi'Kahr, Vulcan
3.) Leonard H. McCoy
->Georgia, USA, Earth (*)
4.) Montgomery Scott
->Scotland, England, Earth (*)
5.) Pavel A. Chekhov
->Russia, Earth (*)
6.) Uhura
->African Confederation (1)
7.) Hikaru Sulu
->San Francisco, California, USA, Earth

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 to present)
1.) Jean-Luc Picard
->Labarre, France, Earth
2.) William T. Riker
->Valdez, Alaska, USA, Earth
3.) Data
->Omnicron Theta
4.) Geordi LaForge
->African Confederation (1)
5.) Worf
->Qo'Nos
6.) Beverly Crusher
->Copernicus City, Luna
7.) Deanna Troi
->Betazed
8.) Natasha Yar
->Turkana IV
9.) Dr. Katherine Pulaski
10.) Wesley Crusher
->Earth

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993 to 1998)
1.) Benjamin Sisko
->New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Earth
2.) Odo
->Founders Homeworld
3.) Ezri Dax
-> Trill
4.) Worf
-> Qo'Nos
5.) Jadzia Dax
-> Trill
6.) Jake Sisko
-> Federation Starship
7.) Miles O'Brien
->Killarney, Ireland, Earth
8.) Quark
-> Ferenginar
9.) Julian S. Bashir
10.) Kira Nerys
-> Bajor

Star Trek: Voyager (1995 to 2001)
1.) Kathryn Janeway
-> Indiana, USA, Earth
2.) Chakotay
-> Central America, Earth (*)
3.) B'Elanna Torres
4.) Thomas E. Paris
5.) Neelix
-> Rinax
6.) The Doctor
-> Jupiter Station
7.) Tuvok
-> Vulcanis Lunar Colony
8.) Seven of Nine
-> Tendara Colony
9.) Harry Kim
-> Charleston, South Carolina, USA, Earth (2)
10.) Kes
-> Ocampa

1. In the Bible for the original Star Trek series, Uhura's birthplace is in the United Africa of States. This conglomeration of states is never referred to in the show. Later, in the TNG, there is an Okudagram that gives the birthplace of Geordi LaForge as the African Confederation. This could be argued to be a discontinuity, if not for this being not present in the canonical material and that being in the canonical material. So, I give the birthplace of Uhura as the African Confederation.
2. Harry Kim's birthplace is mentioned in a social simulation for Seven of Nine conducted by the Doctor in a late Voyager episode.

Tally of birthplaces
(Federation is marked by asterisk)

Earth/Terra/Sol 3 (*)
1.) USA
a. Midwest=2 (Janeway, Kirk)
b. South=3 (Kim, McCoy, Sisko)
c. West=2 (Riker, Sulu)
2.) Central America
1 (Chakotay)
3.) Europe
a. British Isles=2 (O'Brien, Scott)
b. Continental Europe=1 (Picard)
c. Russia=1 (Chekov)
4.) Africa
2 (LaForge, Uhura)

"Off-world"
1.) Sol System (*)
a. Luna=1 (Crusher)
b. Stations=1 (Doctor)
2.) Vulcan's System (*)
a. Vulcan=1 (Spock)
b. Vulcanis Lunar Colony=1 (Tuvok)
3.) Fereginar's System
a. Ferenginar=1 (Quark)
4.) Bajor's System
a. Bajor=1 (Kira)
5.) Ocampa's System
a. Ocampa=1 (Kes)
6.) Talax's System
a. Rinax=1 (Neelix)
6.) Betazed's System (*)
a. Betazed=1 (Troi)
7.) Others, including assumed Earth colonies
a. Omnicron Theta=1 (Data) (*)
b. Tendara Colony=1 (7 of 9) (*)
c. Turkana IV=1 (Yar) (*)

Wesley Crusher is born on an unspecified site on Earth.
Odo is born on an unnamed planet.
Jake Sisko is born on an unnamed Federation starship.

According to the above, the characters of DS9 were the most diverse in their nationalities-Federation, Ferengi, Bajor, Klingon. The other shows presented less diversity and showed strictly a dominant Federation nationality.

And the USA is the dominant Earth culture, with Europe being a near second. Africa and Central America are represented by token individuals. Asia and South America are not represented.

In the USA, the dominant culture is the South, with the Midwest in second and the West in third. The East is not represented.

And if we take the shows as an indication of the American's society interpretation of the global civilization, then

In the 1960's, America and Europe are very important. Africa is noted.

In the 1980's, the position is the same, with less emphasis on Africa.

In the 1990's, Africa is forgotten. Central America is noted briefly, perhaps as a reference to Chakotay's native American roots.

Asia and South America are far less important than Africa or Central America from 1966 to now.

Thwack!!!

Scotland and England are not the same, nor is one contained within the other! They are two bloody distinct countries, as anyone who's ever been to the UK would know.

(If anyone wishes to contest this, let them go up to a Scot and call him English. The resulting injuries will settle all doubts.)

To say "Scotland, England" is like saying "Florida, Georgia".

On a more constructive note, I can make Scotty's entry a bit more detailed:

4.) Montgomery Scott
->Glasgow, Scotland, Earth (*

Yeah. What is it with you lot? The island is called Great Britain. The overall nation is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain comprises the countries England, Scotland and Wales. The capital of the nation is London, located in England. How is this so difficult to remember?

Janeway: Bloomington, Indiana, to be exact

I'd like to add that if we take into account the guest characters and named extras, the (supposed) American predominance is even more overwhelming. I don't know why, but even if for some reason they don't find enough non-Caucasian extras they could at least give them non-English names.

Here's a fairly complete list: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/inconsistencies/human_names.htm

One thing that annoys me too is that the birthplaces of all Americans are very specific, whereas no one has bothered to specify La Forge's or Chekov's birthplace - as if just "Africa" or "Russia" were sufficient.

I thought Montgomery Scott was from Aberdeen...

Julian is NOT from Bajor.

I was going to point out the Scotland, England thing too. And I've never been there

Why can't there be a United States of Africa *and* an African Confederation? It's not like there aren't enough African countries.

I think Kira's could be updated to "Dakor Province, Bajor".

Interestingly, Labarre doesn't exist (yet), or at least my Atlas doesn't think so. Anyone else care to check?

The entire notion of O'Brien as a Kerryman, is, um, laughable. Meaney sounds like a Dub, and his parents live there as per "Homefront." I can't remember his hometown ever being specifically mentioned.

Torres grew up on Kessik IV, no? Can we assume she was born there?
And it's Dakhur Province, natch.

Re: Scotty being from Glasgow. Yes, mea culpa, that's a bit of an unwarranted assumption. We do know he's been on a fair few pubcrawls around Glasgow, though...

"Natch"? What does that mean?

Yah, I was pretty sure I'd spell it wrong, but my Encyclopedia was at home...

Labarre is another annoyance. Once they mention the exact birthplace of a non-American, and it doesn't even exist - at least I didn't find a village or town of this name. However, when I was in Bordeaux a few years ago, I saw a sign to a place called "La Barre" (the bar) which seemed to be a winery. I decided that this should be Picard's Labarre.

There is a town called Deuil la Barre too: http://www.mairie-deuillabarre.fr/

I remember Robert H. Wolfe, way back when he was a DS9 writer, posting something on the newsgroups about Bashir. He said that he was born in "Knightsbridge, England," if my memory serves, but I could be off a little. I assure you that he gave the birthplace, but I'm not positive that I got it right. I think he said it was going to be mentioned in an episode but got cut.

Julian Subatoi Bashir is as English as Queen Victoria. I put a
line in a script once that he was from Knightsbridge, but it got
cut for time.

Not bad memory from April 1998, eh?
