You know, it never before occurred to me that before "Broken Bow," Archer had to have selected a Starfleet person to be the Science Officer for the mission.
Obviously, the TV production dictated that T'Pol would be hanging around for seven years as science officer and therefore any Human in that role would be redundant...
...But wouldn't some Human officer (maybe stuck working on B Deck now) be really annoyed that he got bumped from a prestigious Bridge station on the Very First Explorer Mission?

I like to think Hoshi can be a relief Science Officer. She has the brains, and she's in the Science Department. And since T'Pol has used Hoshi's console a few times, it would only be fair if Hoshi got to use hers too

In "Broken Bow," they mention that Archer hasn't selected a science or medical officer yet. Presumably ther was a big pool of candidates lined up.

Yeah, that's what I thought... I knew the medical officer was basically a "random" choice because Phlox caught Archer's attention.
But given that the NX-01 was on an EXPLORATORY MISSION, I would have thought that they'd want to make sure that the ship had a science officer lined up ahead of time.
On the other hand, this is Archer we're talking about. He's not all that bright...

On the other hand, it didn't look like the Enterprise was going anywhere fast before Klaang turned up. The comms officer had buggered off to Brazil to teach rather than hang around; I'm sure any shortlisted candidates for science and medical positions had plenty to keep them occupied on Earth, and didn't even notice they'd missed the chance of a lifetime.
