Might've been a laser from a blue-ray player or dvd burner, they're small and pretty powerful. You can find plans for a laser gun made with a dvd burner laser that can pop balloons like that on the internet.

Yes, there have been searing laser-phasers on youtube before, but I never saw one combined in as pretty a package and with the sound before, thought this place could do with some well-deserved technoporn.

Hmmm...I wonder what the laws are regarding such things as personal defense?
Not that this is particularly deadly, but laser weapons designed to damage the eyes is the rabid elephant in the room for future land conflicts -despite there being the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons treaty against making blinding weapons and other goodies (like shrapnel that cant be detected by x-rays).

Protocol III of the treaty seems applicable to lasers as combat weapons, though not specificly stated.

Not that the more crazy militaries would be bothered with something as insubstantial as a UN treaty. [Wink]

That's some pretty scary stuff they outlined. The undetectable shrapnel thing sounds the worst of it though, makes my job a little shittier.

Yes, it will be a terrible, month-long arms race until the allies develop "sunglasses"-technology to counter beamy threat. Bolstered by gear from the League of Extraordinary Welders.
I remember reading a science article about vehicle mounted lasers that could blind a thousand men in half a second, and it was banned worldwide already in 1991. I wouldn't be too worried about NK or Iran going Kaneda on us all anytime soon.

Sidenote: Jason, did you notice the part when that guy with the large fingers exploded a balloon with a ray gun? From that show that ran on TV when Lyndon B. Johnson was ruler of the metaworld?

I remember reading within the last few months about a laser designed to temporarily blind large groups of people. I think the article was partly in response to the riots we had here. Safer than rubber bullets or water cannon I suppose, but there seems something quite distasteful about taking away someone's sight in an effort to subdue them.

I dont think laser damage to a retina can be "temporary".
It may be something more akin to the "flashbang" grenade though- something that makes a overwhelming sound with a big flash of light- overwhelming the senses- stunning a target but not doing any real damage (repeated exposure can cause hearing loss though).

The US military has his lovely heat ray to "disperse rioters"- it created the sensation of being burned all over- as riot controll only, of course.
THe government would never use such a thing to, say, clear a park of protestors. [Wink]

Nim, the "wear sungalsses" solution you suggest works great- as long as it's daylight conditions.
Fighting at night with them would be problematic at best- and lasers work just fine in the dark- better actually as human inclination at night is to look towardsudden light sources.
