Yeah, like kid's pyjamases. And the red suits worn from ST:II-VI was to prissy I think, and what with those dog-ugly pants sloping over their 1700-boots and all. No, I say modern FC-suits all the way!!! I love those , almost matadorian, sleeveless collars that kinda resemble the black Bab5-costumes.

Personally, I think the dress uniforms in Insurrection made everyone look like waiters from some over-priced restaurant. I quite preferred the EARLY TNG frock coats. Then someone decided to cut them down to half their length and turn them into SMOCKS. Uhhg.
I am a big fan of Robert Fletcher's wardrobe design. His work really lent a realism to the Trek movies. Unlike the original TV series where everyone wore practically the same thing for every occasion, Fletcher created ranks, divisions, insignia, and every manner of uniform: class-A duty uniforms, off-duty fatigues, combat fatigues, a landing party jacket, etc. These uniforms remain extremely popular today, I think, because they were designed as UNIFORMS, not just costumes.

Then again, Fletcher didn't have to work for a TV show. The TNG-era movies can feature cool new stuff, but this stuff is used in parallel in a variety of TV shows with a great number of differently sized and shaped people. So to remain logical, a complex and comprehensive wardrobe would have to feature multiple sizes and cuts of *every* design to be available for whatever main character or guest star from whichever show needed it.
Personally, I think the TNG movie budgets would be well spent in such an effort. But Paramount might think otherwise. Especially if the TNG era is to be abandoned in the TV shows after Voyager folds, and a whole new era is to be explored in the fifth spinoff.

Good point, but these various items only really have to be tailored for the main Star Fleet characters. Truthfully, TNG costumers have done a pretty good job of filling out the wardrobe and some of what we've seen echoes Fletcher's movies designs. Picard's suede jacket is an evolution of the "bomber jacket" seen in the movies and the division colored undershirt is back in vogue as is the occasional vest.
I keep remembering the TOS episode where Sulu and his landing party were freezing to death on some icy planet because the transporter was out and everyone was wearing their plain ole' tunics. Yes the budget was tight but this was laughable. They could have at least dug out the field jackets they used in the first pilot!
Funny thing is...If you watch "Spocks Brain"..I believe that is the episode...Kirk tells the Landing party to adjust for enviorment..Supposedly..those tunics were designed to adjust to the temp..Now given the fact that they were awefully skimpy..LOL..I'd like to know how they achieved this?..why did Chekov need to phaser the rock and why did Sulu almost freeze to death ??...

I think a built-in heater system was also mentioned in "Day of the Dove". I could see how it would theoretically work for the male members of the landing party, although their faces would freeze anyway. As for the females - well, perhaps they just aren't allowed on cold planets?
Curious how none of the recent or future uniforms have featured skirts any more. Even the dress uniforms have moved completely away from the wraparound style to the masculine tuxedo. I wouldn't mind a skirt variant of the current design, be it unisex or female-only. If it was good enough for TOS and TNG, separated by a century, then how come it's no longer in fashion in DS9/VOY?

Well, the skirt or "skant" as it was called during TNG's first season was VERY unpopular. Troi wore this at the beginning and it led to her being dubbed the "cosmic cheerleader." Both men and women wore these and they were dorky in the extreme.
Wardrobe for TNG and beyond is really only lacking a good field jacket. The movie era jacket was really cool. I would love to have one of those even though it would cost a fortune.
On the other hand, the movies never featured a dress uniform, even though there were opportunities to use one. Slapping ribbons on the breasts of the regular duty uniforms like they did in ST6 was rather dumb, in my opinion.

Don't know, i found the movie uniforms glamorous enough.
But how could that movie dress uniforms looked like?
The difference between the first contact uniform and the insurrection dress uniforms is too great. One completly dark and the looks like it has been boroughed from Love Boat.
I really like the first contact vest! I wonder why they haven't used it for a doctor, but only for captains. Would look cool!
