Did Denise Crosby choose to leave TNG, or did the producers want to kill off Lt. Yar? Certainly, looking back at the first season of TNG, her character is the most underused -- even Worf (who originally was just supposed to be a supernumery officer) gets more screen time than she does!

I thought Worf = Spock... That is, they didn't *want* them on the show, they kept them around as set dressing, and they each grew to be one fo th show's more popular characters.

As for Yar, Crosby did indeed feel underused and wanted out. Which is odd, since she left before the season's end (my guess is that she wanted out early to be available for casting of new fall shows, which would have been happening around the time she quit). Still, the producers managed to get a workable episode out of it - killing her senselessly instead of an heroic death.

She didn't do anything to warrant anything else, of course.

Looking back, I don't think she would have been much more than a hindrace for anything. Worf was a much more interesting character, and gave us nifty Klingon episodes. What would Yar have brought to the table? Episodes about militant orphans? Woohoo.

They did use her death well though. Bringing her back in Yesterday's Enterprise, her daughter in Redemption and Unification. All good episodes.

I'd still like to see her brought back. As Tasha.

Impossible? I always hoped that that eternal practical jokester Q would pop her onto the bridge of Picard's bridge, and let him (and her) worry themselves to death about whether or not it was really "her".

I always envisioned a newly-emotioned Data deciding to change history and rescue her from the Romulans. Picard would have to go after him and prevent damage to the timeline, so you end up with a whole "Heart of Darkness" theme. . . how I cursed when they started saying "Insurrection" was going to be like "Heart of Darkness!" But fortunately they screwed it up.

So there you have it, my secret shame, my most illogically fanboyish idea ever. You heard it here first. 8)

You know, for all we know, she might still be alive. Remember, all the evidence we have that she's dead is the word of a Romulan.

'Course, she'd be about sixty...

That's what I was going to say.

I wonder how TNG would be different if Sirtis had been cast as Yar, and Crosby as Troi.

Actually, you're not too far out.

When they were planning the series, they had a character by the name of Lt. Marcha Hernandez, who Sirtis would have been cast as. Hernandez was meant to be the equivalent of Yar. Something changed however.......

Oh, Denise Crosby is the bomb. Granted, at 60, the allure may start to fade, but I'd give her better odds than most.
