I'm new to this forum so forgive me if somebody else has raised this issue already. I know hearing the same arguments gets tedious.
Anyway.
Once again this is regarding series V. Somewhere (not exactly sure of the source)I read that the producers have decided to leave the "Star Trek" out of the new series' title, which this same source believes will be called 'Enterprise'. Yet the same people who believe in the 'Enterprise' premise use the fact that the sites www.startrekenterprise.com,net and org have been registered by paramount as proof that the pre TOS setting is true. Doesn't this contradict what they believe the producers said about the title? (by they I am refering to the source, sorry to be so vague!)
Maybe this is just me holding on to the little hope I have left that it wont be set in the 'past' so to speak but I just thought I'd bring it up. I wonder what Gene would think if he was still around. I bet he wouldn't be too pleased if these plans are true.

Gene wasn't pleased at some aspects of ST VI (and other Star Trek movies. Not just V). I think he'd have probably had a fit at DS9.

I would imagine that, when writing a new episode or series or movie or book, their main objective isn't to create to please Gene. Disregarding the issue of giving Gene too much credit, and him having a quicker ass-pull than Darkstar himself, the audience is much more alive.
My house is like, a billion years old. When we were doing renovations, I don't think our concern was "Will this fit with what the original builder thought?" Seeing as how the original house had outdoor bathrooms, I think it's rightly fine that we decided to built the house to please ourselves.

To be blunt, I imagine Rick Berman knows better than maybe only two or three other people what Gene would or would've wanted. The fans who have a paranoid hatred of Berman/Braga are just putting words into Gene's mouth when they say that he'd oppose a prequel.

Actually, Berman ran a rough concept of DS9 past Gene before he died ... and Gene approved.

Even if he didn't, the show still would have aired. I don't believe he wielded any power then, other than running down the halls saying "THERE ARE SIX GALAXIES!!! I HAVE DECREED IT SO!! I AM A GOLDEN GOD!"

I thought that Gene would have disapproved of teh Maquis, since humans were suppossed to be, like, great, in the 24th century. Dude.

Actually, Gene (Ghu rest his soul) had a few ideas which were either "off-the-wall" or "too advanced for 20th century minds" - depending upon your point of view.
The most obvious is the Crusher quote (sic): "People were actually scared of death - it terrified them!"
As soon as I heard that, I thought - hey - we've evolved! Talk about a radical philisophical change, this will make the entire series different than anything we've ever seen.
Turns out Gene was farting in a windstorm. Nothing ever came of it - Riker was sure terrified in "Skin of Evil" - as was Troi.
My point is, sometimes a person can indeed improve on another's idea - even if the originator is acknowledged as a genious. It is called "standing upon the shoulders of giants".

I cannot seem to recall Norman Felton ever being called a genius. Nor has Richard Irving ever been called one. The same goes with Kevin Reynolds and Herbert Brodkin.
I think we shouldn't be so cavalier about which people we're labelling as geniuses, as evidenced above, there are many other people who produced 60's television shows, which apparently is the qualification for the label.
