Star Trek V is canon. Anyone who thinks otherwise should be defenestrated.

It's technically impossible to accept some of ST V as canon. The Enterprise A cannot, for instance, have 70+ decks, numbered in reverse. That does not mean that the whole movie has to be thrown out. But the parts that are self-contradictory should be discarded. We do that here all the time. Frank's position on the Defiant, for instance. For him, all the scenes where the ship is shown to be one size outweigh the smaller number of scenes where it is shown to be another. Since the Defiant cannot, within the context of the show, change shape at will, it can have only one size. Some say 120 meters, some say 170. That isn't important.

What is important is that we are dealing with a program created by people, and it will have mistakes in it. That can't be avoided. Our task, as we have taken it upon ourselves, is to explain, overcome, or otherwise "fix" those mistakes.
