Possibly the most useless tidbit ever, but nonetheless hearing words like this coming out of Berman's mouth making it seem so much more real.
By the way, in the same interview Berman points out that

Does this mean that Biller/Fuller/Livingston/Kroeker/Landau/Bole/Kolbe/Sternbach/Delgado/Curry/Legato/Westmore/Blackman *whew* mightn't neccessarily be on board?

Well, they're keeping Okuda, and my guess is because of his dual skills as continuity adviser and graphic artist guy. I dunno about Sternbach - certainly he can do the job, and has designed a myriad of different alien ships for Voyager, but maybe they want to try for soemthing different altogether.

Besides, what is Berman gonna say - "we have a stupid, sucky little starship"?
It's grain of salt time. Producers *always* love their new project, are *always* really excited about it, and are *always* going to present a new and different kind of show. It's part of Hollywood. Me personally, I'm happy to speculate, but won't render judgement until I finish watching the pilot (at least).

Oh, I understand totally that Berman's only gonna praise the series. But still, I can't help but get a little excited when we start getting interviews like this... it's the beginning of the end of the baseless rumor-mongering, in other words. Within a month I imagine we'll know many times the amount that we know now.

TNG had seven main crew members for most of its run (Picard, Riker, Data, Crusher, Worf, LaForge, and Troi), and, of those seven, four-and-a-half were human.
DS9 had six main crew members (Sisko, Kira, Dax, Bashir, O'Brien, and Odo), and only three of them were human. Plus, there was Quark as another alien main character, and the later addition of Worf.
VOY started off w/ seven main crew members (Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Torres, Kim, Tuvok, and HoloDoc), four-and-a-half of whom were human. Then there were Neelix and Kes, both non-human, and then Seven, who might count as partially non-human, depending upon your opinion.
So, this is going to be the most anthropocentric crew since TOS. Joy...

Actually, in many ways that's getting back to Roddenberry more than anything. It's best to talk about the human condition either using a cast representing a broad spectrum of humans, or using the one or two aliens on each show that show the human condition by foiling it (Spock, Data, Odo, the Holodoc, Seven, and to an extent Quark and Worf). But the Trois and Kiras and Tuvoks and Daxes of the world are handicapped for doing human experience stories somewhat, because we see them, (and they're written, to an extent) as aliens first, and "people" second, and they're not alien enough to attack stuff from the other way...
Also, a show with more than half the cast covered in heavy prosthetics is probably too "hardcore" to woo the soft sci-fi viewers that series V desperately needs to connect with... we're talking about the people who used to watch TNG but now spend their time watching other intelligent stuff on TV, be it The West Wing or CSI or, gasp, Buffy.
Oh, and since Troi wasn't all that alien anyway, I don't see how this is really any different from TNG, which I'd count as a 5-2 show as well. When you look at the part-time/recurring crew that we saw (Yar, Wesley, Barclay Guinan and Ro) and realise that 4 out of 5 were also human, I think it stands to reason that TNG was even more human-centric.

I *SO* want to go and get all my magazines that discuss the development of Voyager in the lead up to January 1995... It is HILARIOUS reading through the rumours and half truths!
I will say this and I mean this, reading about DS9 then Voyager now Series V, Berman without fail, says:
"This is going to be the best series yet. Its is going to be the CLOSEST series to what TOS was". Or words to that effect.
He says it each and every time.
DS9, because of the 'alien-ness' and unfamiliarity and the 'gritty-ness' of it compared to the 'luxurious and pacifist' TNG.
And closely paralleled it Voyager, in reguards to 'getting out there and exploring a whole new region of space... its getting RIGHT back to what TOS was... Boldly going where no man has gone before.
Of COURSE he's going to say that, each series is going to be more like the Original Series, they want to sell this show to the fans and the public alike, that is what people WANT... but they're not going to get it. I think Berman REALLY, *REALLY* wants to do his own show, but doesn't want to leave the safety of the Star Trek banner... who would - he's pretty secure in his job is he not?
But he doesn't want to have any back story to have to conform to. Why don't they just make Trek... STAR TREK... I can't believe that you can not explore what we have already 'met' and then push it and prod it.
I mean look at all the classes of Federation Starships that exist now. For the fans, it just becomes ludicrous.
So Berman wants the comfort of the name Star Trek, with out the baggage that comes with it.
Whereas we want the whole kit and kaboodle, we want 'Star Trek'; we want Klingons and Romulans and Bajorans and Cardassians and Borg etc. We ALSO, and think this is what it should (and does for me) boil down to, should have a strong cast of characters. These should be people we can grow to understand, respect, love and enjoy. We VALUE continuity in Trek. We watch Star Trek because its like reading about what is going on 'at home' every week. But you can still push the boundaries with Star Trek - the stories are limitless where as Berman, knows that he has to give the execs and the 'money people' a fresh new show, using the tried and true success of Star Trek.

TonyB -- this probably does belong in the Flame board, but ... those views are the opinions of a member here (but, it's not The_Tom). The_Tom has 'em posted, not because he agrees with them, but precisely because he doesn't agree with them. I would imagine, probably because he thinks they're the most insane things he's ever heard. I tend to agree.
Look at my sig. for another by Omega. Or just go browse the flameboard for other cool sayings by our favorite right-right-right-right-so far to the right he's past the mid-west militias' right-wing-fundamentalist-extremist conservative republican.

OK Jeff, I had to go back and look again at both of your e-signatures. Hmmmm, I see what you are getting at. That makes me feel a HELL of a lot better.

Well, though Omega did indeed say those things and I'm sure he'll stick by them, I was beginning to think myself that they were a bit nasty.. I mean, I know Omega knows there's nothing personal and we just love berating one another for the sake of beration, but I agree that for someone new it might get interpreted the wrong way.
