In the original Star Trek, the VFX people had difficulty in doing the space shots of the USS Enterprise. In some cases, the stars could be seen through the nacelles. In this picture, the starbird K'T'Inga class vessel starboard pylon can be seen through the middle ship's port pylon. The lines of the larger's wing pylon, especially the bottom line, can be seen in the starboard pylon of the smaller ship. Considering the year of this episode, this is sloppy VFX-compositing of images didn't work.
A few other notes: 1. Has anyone ever questioned why the K'Vort class battlecrusiers can dock at DS9? In detailed views of the bow of a K'Vort class, there is no hatch. There is a very large disruptor. Yet people can walk into and out of the ship with no difficulty. 2. D-Class designations-There are two canon instances of this use, not one as some believe. a. "Trials and Tribble-ations". Major Kira Nerys identified the IKS Gr'Oth as "D-7 Class". b. "Once More Unto the Breach". Gen. Kor refers to a "D-5 Class" cruiser. One is Federation, the other is Klingon. Conclusion, the D class designations are standard for older Klingon ships. If you argue against the D-Class designations, I would love to see your pointless arguments about the first useage. They should prove amusing.

I just looked at the video I have of this, and I honestly do not see the two ships blending together at all. I even used slow motion at full screen

Deadcujo and others: do you have a mouse? If you do, start at the point where the wing begins and at the lower leading edge. Now trail the mouse down the lower leading edge. What you will see is a line like this on the wing pylon of the smaller ship-
This line matches the lower leading edge. As I wrote, I became aware of something else. The decoverative yellow design of the larger Klingon bird of prey actually "bleeds" onto the pylon of the smaller ship. At the point of contact, the pylon of the smaller ship becomes "lost". I believe that in compositing the image the VFX actually merge the image of the large Klingon and the small Klingon ship. Of course, you wouldn't see the merging of the ships on your VCR. Even at the slowest speed, the images are moving. The best way to study this is to see the image shot by shot.

That could be the result of the video capture, actually. What capture device was used? Many vidcap devices interpolate the data a bit to make up for the descrepency between video lines and computer pixels to smooth things out. I know that the Snappy card does this.

Although I'm not sure what Trinculo is referring to, I zoomed into the image and there is a rectangular structure where the two wings cross. This could be some lighted spot in front of the "larger" cruiser, and the combination of both is accidentally matching the color of the "smaller" cruiser wing.
1. The Defiant can't dock as well, although there is supposed to be a hatch inside the deflector housing according to the DS9TM. I can't see it in the outside view of the ship.
