I was reading through the episode summaries for the original Star Trek on the official Star Trek Web Site. In the episode summary for "Charlie X", the USS Antares is identified as SS Antares. This site was upgraded in the last month, so this may reflect current thinking on the Antares. If this information is accurate, this changes perspective on the Antares.

I checked the Startrek.com website again. The starship page still claims it's the USS Antares. Since the crew wore Starfleet uniforms, I'm quite sure it's a Starfleet ship.

They had a Starfleet badge similar to the Enterprise emblem and I think they also has rank signs. So the most probable solution is that they were actually Starfleet personnel.

Bernd: Several points to make. 1. The page that you checked I believe is the Transportation section of the databanks. This site is (1.) old, about two years old (no entry is newer than the middle of season 4 of the series DS9) and (2.) incomplete. 2. The uniforms. There are only two instances where I saw the uniforms from the original pilot-the brownish uniforms-in the original series. The first is the Antares crew. The second is the captain of the SS Beagle. His uniform is covered by a tunic, but the neck and the sleeves can be seen. His ship crashed in 2261. This would indicate that the uniforms of the Cage had been replaced by the uniforms of the original series by 2261. This important piece of information substantiates the claim that the Antares is a non-Starfleet ship.
