I found this thread over in the TrekBBS forum, and I thought it might provoke some interesting discussion here. Someone did a "sketch" (you'll see why I put that in quotes in a minute) of the Enterprise, modifying several aspects of it. Does it look, in you people's opinions, better or worse? I think it looks much better.

I love it. I absolutely love it. It's perfect. Those who said that the design wasn't the problem were 100% correct. It's not the Akira-esque layout that makes it look too advanced. It's the little, almost subconscious details.

I hope and pray they'll make a few changes in this direction. That is a kick-ass ship for the 22nd century.

Now that's what I'm talking about. There are still some things I'd prefer changed [the "turbochargers" need to be redesign to be bigger and slightly bulkier, the pylon pod needs to be boxer]. The angles and the colors are much better--- and as commented there they make all the difference.

Why didn't Eaves do this originally, it would have been much much much better.

This is much better, but I still don't think it look 100 years older than the TOS Enterprise. But the cosmetic changes do make a big difference.

Now that is nice. Even more reminiscent of the P-38 Lightning, it appears.

I may have missed this someplace but what are the political conditions in this new series, and what is the mission purpose of the 'new' ship?

The E is a science/research vessel, making for nice clean lines and an uncluttered hull, where as a combat vessel would have a cluttered hull....

True enough Ritten, but bear in mind that design philosophies wax and wane - and technologies evolve. Some of the "clutter" on the exterior may be primitive sensors, which can't be concealed within the hull at this juncture in time.
