Now, I don't usually pick out much technical stuff, but I formed a couple of theories from what I saw in this ep.

1. The Vulcan ship had TIE-like wing-things on it, rather than a full ring like the other ship we've seen. The back of the wings glowed blue, which usually indicates that they're nacelles. Now, as for what the difference is between a full ring and wing-like pieces, that's up in the air. But this Vulcan ship hasn't been used in 'many years', or so says T'Pol.

2. When the Enterprise and the Vucan ship were flying through the nebula, one of the shots showed the underside of the ships. On the Vulcan ship, there was a recess and a glowing white part, comparable to the saucer-top deflector on the Intrepid. Now, the underside dome on the Enterprise was glowing simlilarily. Perhaps this is the deflector? We know that the dish up front is for just the sensors, but is the blue glowy bit behind it the deflector, or perhaps it's the underside dome? Of course, the glowy bit on the Vulcan ship could just be it's sensor package, as the Vulcan captain mentioned that the ship is equiped with 'translinear sensors', whatever those are.

Some things to ponder. Feel free to poke me if I screwed something up. [Big Grin]

I think Doug Drexler mentioned that the white glowy dome on the underside of the NX-01's saucer is some kind of sensor platform as an homage to what has been basically accepted for years as one on the NCC-1701.

My personal leaning has been that the yellow dish on the bow is the main long range sensors thingo, while the deflector is mounted behind it and emits the blue glow.

To digress a bit, was there ever a great Congress of Fanboys in the Seventies that convened in the Vatican and decided conclusively what the gold dish was meant to be on the unrefit 1701? Sensors? Deflectors? Photon-torpedo-launcher one week, communications transmitter the next, and phasers the week after?

::shrug:: Beats me if there was a Star Trek Convention on Technology at the Vatican, but I have always heard the the sensor-dish looking thing on the original Enterprise was simply that: sensors. The first I ever heard of navigational deflectors being on the Enterprise was after she was refit (I read it in Shane Johnson's book).

I you want original intention, I think someone here (Peregrinus perhaps?) posted parts of Matt Jefferies' design notes and that indicated that he intended for that to be a sensor dish (along with the planetary sensor array on the bottom of the saucer).

The Vulcan ship from "Fusion" was the Vahklas. Did it remind anyone else (vaguely, I admit) of the Sydney-class?

Reminded me more of Darth Maul's ship from some Star Wars flick...

I thought of Darth Maul's ship, too! [Wink]

One thing I was a bit surprised about was that Trip was able to provide sufficient help in repairing a Vulcan ship's engines, when the Vulcans are supposedly many years more advanced than we are. They've got Warp 6.5 engines -- I assume the principles aren't that different (warp is warp). But maybe he should have been taking notes on how to make a faster engine?

Oh and another thing -- isn't it amazing at just how compatible all of the starship docking facilities are? They're a perfect airtight match! (wink, wink)

But it was an old ship, right? Maybe it was only as advanced as the ENT.

As for these "wings", if I'm picturing them correctly (won't see the ep 'til Saturday), I suspect they're just something halfway between a ring and nacelles.
