There was a thread of starship roles during peace-time with TNG designations. Here is what I think what the different classes were used as and designated. Also, I consider armor as hull strength and shield strength.

Sovereign Class- I consider these ships battleships because of their armament and armor strength. These ships are fast, armed with the latest weaponry, and can take a hit from a Borg beam without the crew taking much concern.

Galaxy Class- These ships would be in the battlecruiser area. The armament of these ships could be in the area of the Sovereigns but their armor is lacking somewhat and the Galaxies are fast.

Ambassador Class- Heavy Cruisers or Battleships. They can take a beating with their heavy armor and armament.

Akira Class- Heavy Cruisers or Battlecruisers. I don't take the theory that they are FighterCarriers because usually carriers are not heavily armed and do not operate alone or with few escorts as seen onscreen.

Nebula Class- Light Cruisers because they do not fight the destroyer type especially with a tactical pod attached to it. These ships are just too large and heavily armed to be destroyers.

Excelsior Class- These ships can be deemed destroyers because comparable to other ships, they have less armament and armor unless they are upgraded to modern specifications. Then I can see them as Light Cruisers.

That is all for right now. I will add part two later on.

I don't think that the Sovereign class has the same power in armament as the Galaxy class but it is possible, I guess. I would put them as Command Cruisers.

The Ambassador class could be either a 2nd class battleship or a pocket battleship.

The Nebula class would be a Heavy Cruiser. The Excelsior would be yes a light cruiser.

Sovereigns are almost certainly more heavily armed than the Galaxy. There's not a big difference between the Galaxy and the Nebula. The Ambassador's quite a step below those two, much less the Sovereign.

Disregarding the internal hierarchy of Starfleet ships, it would be rather pretentious for them to call any of their vessels "battleships". That designation was supposed to apply to the big Dominion vessels, and Starfleet has nothing that would come even close in size. And we've seen that Dominion ships in general pack as much firepower per cubic meter as their UFP counterparts or more, so a fully operational battleship ought to eat dozens of Galaxies for breakfast and then clean between its teeth with a Sovereign or two.

I guess Starfleet could have separate "wartime" and "peacetime" designations for its ships. But none of those ought to be "battleship", as long as Starfleet calls the big Dominion design by that name.

Nah, what did they call their ships prior to the Dominion war then?

I do think the Sovereign is more powerful than your average Dominion battleship (not the Valiant one or the super-Battleship we see in the final episode)

In fact, it was beaten into the ground so deep, that it wound up on the other side of the world. Then the people on the other side beated it into the ground so deep, it wound up back here again. And so we decided to beat it back to them and so forth. [Big Grin]
