Ok I’ve been looking over a few schematics and I’ve noticed something about the NX-01…what is that pod between the two nacelles with the blue thing on top? For the first few weeks of enterprise I had automatically assumed it was engineering but I was wrong. I found this:

and this

and that confirmed that it was not engineering, so is it true? Does a warp core need a symmetrical warp field governor, I haven’t heard of one until now.

We haven't really heard of any other starships requiring 3 phases of plasma accelerators, either. I'd say these components were either replaced with new technology as warp engineering progressed or simply integrated with the warp propulsion system a little better. I imagine that the symmetrical warp field generator has a similar function or at least relation to the TNG:TM's mention of off-axis field controllers.

I believe Drexler's intention was the suggest that Earth Warp Drive broke through to Warp 5 levels only by a whole smattering of extra tech gadgets (warp plasma "turbochargers" to increase power and a governor to then keep the ship stable at high speeds) which more gradual advancements to the actual core technology rendered no longer neccessary in the years to come.

That makes sense, seeing that only 30 years ago it required a whole shit load of equipment to enhance a car engine to bring if over 400-500 hp while now I have seen standard engines going beyond that.

Well, not exactly standard engines. IIRC the governor has to be removed to do that. Which makes me wonder: Would the NX-01 go faster than warp 5 with the governor removed? [Wink]
