What was the name of the Vulcan combat cruiser? Was it Sh'Raan or Sh'Ran? I know Mark originally posted "Sh'Raan" but Bernd's site shortens the name to "Sh'Ran" and I missed the frickin' episode, so can someone clue me in?

While we're at it, does anyone have the latest issue of the Magazine? In the article about the Vulcan ship, they make the claim that the ring isn't physically attached to the rest of the ship at all. To which I respond: ?! So, is this really the case? I can't seem to think of a shot which would really confirm or deny where exactly the ring is connected.

That was my thinking, but, IIRC, this wasn't a bit of editorializing, this was a quote from Drexler, who should know. My mind was appropriately boggled.

And the second thing I thought was, "Fool! You're watching Episode II! Star Trek thought banned until after!"

In every shot of the final in the magazine, if that ring isn't connected, it sure as hell is doing a good job of faking it.
On a technical side, why would you want your warp engine physically separated from your ship? Unless your systems are EXTREMELY well balanced, I would think there would be too much chance of your engine taking off and leaving you behind (or vice versa). Why make problems for yourself?

Do we know what the ring does at warp speed? I mean, maybe it's rotating or zooming back and forth along the ship's hull or something else. If the ring doesn't do anything at all, I don't see a reason why it should be connected like that, with only one pylon. I guess if the Vulcans are that advanced, they have thought of safety protocols to ensure the ring does not fly away without the ship.
Looking at the picture (if we assume the ring does rotate at warp) I think there's an inner and outer ring. Like the Stargate. The inner ring is connected to the tail while the outer ring *does something*.

Perhaps the connection was Eden FX's idea ("Gosh, I guess he forgot to attach the two things!")?
Those study models are not very pretty. Especially the Daedalus meets T'Plana Hath is sucky. But the idea of using the more unconventional canon looks of Earth/Starfleet ships for the Vulcan fleet was a good one.
