Maybe Hernando Cortez wasn't an "evil" conquistadore in Star Trek's Earth history.

Well that or the ship was named after a 23rd Century admiral. I do agree that some names shouldn't be used on a ship... a Galaxy Class USS Hitler would definately be out of the question. I'd consider a Galaxy Class USS Ron D. Moore before that name. At least TPTB aren't using names from pop culture in Star Trek... yet. Heaven forbid if I see a ship named USS P. Diddy with a Captain Shakira onboard going to a planet called Ozzyfesta.

From the RW point of view, USS Hitler of course wouldn't wash (and besides, there aren't too many people named Hitler around to create a more positive image for the name, since I believe German and Austrian officials just plain won't accept that as the name for a child any more).

But from the Trek point, who knows? They do have ships honoring people apparently from the Stalinist regime (the Zhukov and the Prokofiev at least). Perhaps they name ships on the principle of "let's never forget", like USS Tian An Men, not on the principle of "let's always honor".

For that matter, USS Thunderchild, if your definition of pop is not wed to any particular era.

Mybad. I guess I meant that the names aren't as blatant as say a tie in from the Austin Powers franchise or the Murder Inc. music group.

There, case closed. Can you think of anyone else more deserving of a starship being named after him than this guy? [Big Grin]

Adelphi
Newark, the Adelphi in TIN MAN was named after the town of Adelphi, MD (right outside of DC), where Dennis Bailey and David Bischoff (and I, at one point) live(d). It was not named after a theme.
