Finishing-up a TOS era Frigate model, it suddenly occurred to me, that there is no real indication where the TOS ship's weapons are, or what they look like. I'm familiar with Franz Joseph's phaser locations and The refit Enterprise seems to be a good indicator itself.. In the TV show, the had the phaser and torpedo shorts just coming from the lower saucer area in general. Anybody have a guess?
I'm leaning towards the NX-01's retraceable weapons, inside hatches. Since the TOS Enterprise had no obvious weapon mounts, it probably doesn't have the refit ship's obvious two-gun batteries. The torpedo launcher might even be in the dorsal...

I remember seeing the weapons come from VARIOUS areas of the lower saucer. At one point, phasers were coming from the very tip of the lower saucer, later, it was the middle. I don't recall the torps being anywhere BUT the middle forward center of the saucer.

Yeah, "orbital bombardment" phaser fire sometimes came from halfway between the ventral dome and the saucer rim...
Dialogue suggests "forward", "port/starboard" and "amidships" phasers, as well as up to six torpedo tubes. Aft weaponry was never mentioned AFAIK.
I'm all for saying that the FJ phaser locations are correct, but that the emitters are retractable like in ENT, and that there may or may not be additional emitters on the secondary hull (in the refit positions). Formerly, I thought the "amidships" phasers would best be the ones on the secondary hull belly, but they could also be the ones near the saucer ventral dome - in which case the "forward" phasers would be the ones halfway towards the rim, or roughly where FJ puts them.
Six torpedo tubes offer a lot of wiggle room. There could be several in the visually roughly identified ventral location, then two more in the FJ location, and perhaps also aft torpedoes. Or then all six could be clustered together in the ventral location. Not all of those need be of the same "caliber", even - thus explaining the preferential use of a few.

retractable emitters and weapons ports would explain why the 1701-no suffix needed so much larger weapons crews than her descendants.. there was a lot more �physical machinery involved! by comparison.. phaser strips seem to require no labor to operate besides computer and power control (and possibly changing of emitters as they become spent)

There could also be much more of this retractable gear than meets the eye. The ion measurement pod from "Court Martial" could be just one of many such observation stations. Docking adapters could emerge from surprising locations. The tractor beam emitter could indeed swivel like much of fan material has it do.
Too bad the camera always happens to blink or go out of focus when these things happen.
Add to this the retracting aft spheres and forward spires of the nacelles, and the incredible size-changing deflector dish... Were I to ever be appointed Lesser Deity In Charge Of Redoing TOS, I'd add *really* subtle CGI to show the spheres, spires and phaser banks actually extending! There's so much mechanical motion that could be added to the 1701-nil.

something just occured to me... in THE CAGE, we SAW the big Laser battery, from the Enterprise. That was about the same size as the phase cannons on the NX-01.

Despite the odd dialogue choices used to describe that weapon, I don't think it makes sense for it to be anything other than an artillery piece. I mean, it had a sight on it and everything.
