Does anyone grasp the basic concept of warp drive? any Physics students out there? I once read a basic description that went something like "even though Einstein said there was a limit to how fast an object could move through space there was no limit to how fast space itself could move" So in theory a dubspace field 'cuts' a hole in space and moves it??? with the ship itslef remaining stationary in that field? I asked my physics teacher about it years ago (nearly ten! holy shit..) and she just bit into an apple and ignored me.
Stephan Hawking once said 'he was working on that' on a visit to the set, i won't be holding my breath for the reason that this is the man who wrote brief history of time based on the fact he thought 'thats the way it probably works' then ten years down the line said 'tear it up, i've devised a new theory about the way it probably works...' Wonder if Okuda could get away with that and make a few quid???

Sound advice.

No-one knows what warp drive is, because it doesn't exist. There are some vague theoretical (fantastical) propulsian mechanisms labelled as 'warp drive', but the Star Trek variant that involves 'subspace' and 'warp coils' is utter nonsense. Read the Star Trek: TNG Technical Manual for a possible 'in-universe' treknobabble explanation.

Yeah, Star Trek has jumbled together a bunch of terms and technobabble in an effort to SUGGEST the presence of a working system of FTL travel for the purposes of the show, but it's rather off in respect to how any analogous real-life system would/could work and requires a rather extensive suspension of disbelief in order to maintain the appearance.

For a cursory inspection of some real-world possibilities, check out this NASA page.

The basic guestimate is that 'high energy matter-antimatter plasma' is channeled between coils of something, creating a warp field, generally in the same way that an electro-magnet creates a magnetic field.

i'd rather like to know [i]how[/] you do a QEC on FF-2500 Nuclear Turbine Engine from a VF-1 Valkyrie? [Big Grin] Warp drive is nice but Macross Mecha is more my speed...
