Also, if you look at the angle at which the Miranda is crashing, it doesn't look likely that the pods deployed from that ship. They could indeed be falling from a Sovereign or Akira or something...

Those can't be Akira or Sovereign pods. They're the Defiant/Intrepid pod design. They could come from the Miranda in question. Since we don't see any open hatches on the upper saucer, they probably came from the lower saucer or from the shuttlebays.

If all those pods were somehow crammed into the shuttlebays, there'd be no room for shuttles.
