I think I prefer the idea of bigger pods, where you can pile in loads of people. If a larger shuttle or runabaout with a transporter onboard was also able to escape your starship, you coukd use it do redistribute later. Whereas alternately I have this nightmare that you're going along a corridor trying to find an empty pod but finding that they already all have 4 people on and are about to launch. Larger Saratyoga-style pods are a damn sight more amenable to a spot of overcrowding than a four-man pod not much larger inside than a large SUV.
