It is said that the Galaxy class (about 90% the same as we know it) was one of the candidates for a new Enterprise to feature in the FIRST movie. Instead the chose a design that was very similar to the TOS design.

What if they did use a Galaxy class in the first movie, what do you think the other designs (Federation AND Non-Federation) would look like?

Said by who, exactly? These same people who you keep quoting as saying that Voyager will be going home in the first few eps of this season, definitely no-doubt 100-percent you better believe it? Because I've been meaning to talk to you about them. . .

The development of a new Enterprise for the Phase II show and then The Motion Picture is VERY well documented. Every doodle that Ralph McQuarrie and all did is available. And there's nothing that resembles the Galaxy-class. This was meant to be the same ship, just improved - such a radically different concept would mean a whole new vessel.

And as for imaging what everything else would be like, well Christ - they f*** up so often with what they have, never mind what might have been. 8)

Okay, that Voyager stuff was a mistake, I AM REALLY SORRY ABOUT THAT!! That was from a mailinglist in which someone said he had an inside informant. I'm not going to believe those people anymore. I'd like to forget that whole incedent please.

This on the other hand is from a booklet that came with the Enterprise-D blueprints. I can scan it, and put it here if you like.

Please do. Don't worry about the Voyager stuff, you were young, you tried it, you didn't like it and you didn't inhale. . . 8)

I always want to know the latest when it comes to Star Trek But some people tend to use that to spread false rumors. I'll be more careful next time.

I did forget to mention the source here, I know that Rick Sternbach is one of the people who was talking about it. The other one was Andrew Probert, I believe.
Check this tread in about 1 or 2 hours for the scan to confirm this.
I am at school right now. I need to get home first

Okay, here it is. Now I may have misinterped it a little. The Galaxy class design was first made just after 'The Motion Picture', BUT Probert cleary states that it (his early Galaxy class painting) was the ship he wanted to see in 'The Motion Picture'.

The question is asked by Rick Sternbach:

BTW: The TNG Galaxy class is different in having a bridge 'bubble' and longer(!!!) nacelles.

And don't forget to answer the question what effect it would have on all other designs, if the Enterprise in 'The Motion Picture' was a Galaxy class.

Well, they'd be in a tough position to come up with very futureistic and unique ships, then.

You underestimate the power of imagination.

Just look at all the ships-that-never-were on the web.

Hmm, I don't know. . . using it as 'the basis' is hardly saying "I wanted the E-A to look like the E-D," and doesn't really justify trying to do a @what-if~ of 80 years of starship design.

As for the bridge, I do know they tried several really funky ideas for the design, all very 70's, especially for the Phase II stage of the project. All abandoned when they came to do TMP in favour of an updated TOS-style bridge. So if you ever wonder why the E-D's bridge looks like something from the 1970's (and it does), that's why.
