WHat do you think of the Niagara class originally having Ambassador-style nacelles instead of Galaxy ones?
It would be consistent with the low rego of the USS Wellington, NCC-28473, and it would also explain why the first Galaxy-type ship after the Niagara actually using Galaxy-nacelles is the New Orleans, with rego's in the 5**** range.

It certainly makes sense - after all, a ship with a "28" registry definately wouldn't have Galaxy-type nacelles, and given later Ambassadors have "26" registries, and that the Niagara class shares many Ambassador components, this would be logical. Take note however, that the Princeton's nacelles aren't exactly Galaxy-class either, but modified, shortened versions. So, maybe after the New Orleans class entered service with the normal small Galaxy-type nacelles, modified versions (for whatever reason) of these were retrofitted to the Niagara class ships?

There is some debate on that, but yes, we can pretty much say it was. There is a screen grab of the onscreen appearance, and a photo of the actual studio model over at Bernd's place:

But that's the Princeton, not the Wellington.
