I've just read Bernd's article on the size of the Oberth class, and learned that the U.S.S. Raman from "Interface" was originally, like the Pegasus, supposed to be a different class of ship than the Oberth. I also remember that there weren't any exterior shots of the ship in the episode, and that the Encyclopedia only listed the ship as Oberth long after the episode was filmed. Does anyone know if the Raman's MSD was ever seen in the ep, which might reinforce the possibility of a new design?

Yes, this would be interesting to learn. I recall that the telepresence probe was reflected off some sort of a reflective vertical display, but whether this was a MSD or just some corridor paneling, I don't remember.

The main set for the Raman was a custom job, with a central console and no apparent large wall displays (the shot in Bernd's article pretty much shows it all). The crew was really small, just seven people in civvies, but that's not unheard of for a modern Oberth (the Yosemite had a small civilian-dressed crew, too). The firefighting gear seemed primitive - extinguishers instead of forcefields. The corridors were of the ageless TOS-movie/TNG standard.

I'd love for the Raman to be some sort of a new design separate from the Oberth lineage, if only so that it could be a bit more aerodynamic for the purpoted atmospheric flight. but the ship being an Oberth doesn't cause major problems, either.

Well, if it was intended to be a Cheyenne like the Pegasus, that might explain the errenous registry in the Encyclopedia. However, the correct registry was seen clearly in the episode.

The Raman could not have been a Cheyenne because the rego in a display on board showed something in the 20000 range, way to low and early for a Cheyenne. And the rego from the Encyclopedia is also a little low for a Cheyenne.

The rego in the Encyclopedia is perfect for a Cheyenne. I say this because Okuda gave the Crazy Horse it's registry of 50346 and assigned it as Cheyenne class at the same time. It was only after this that it was displayed as an Excelsior. So, I believe that Cheyennes have registries of at lest 50346.

I didn't mean to imply that the Raman was supposed to be a Cheyenne. I meant that, like the example of the Pegasus, the Raman was supposed to be a different type of ship. Sorry for the confusion.
