I've started drawing the refitted Enterprise (nothing to show yet). But I'm having some trouble figuring out the correct colors for this ship. It ranges from metallic to light blue-ish to white to some sort of light sand-brown.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Especially ideas about the Aztec pattern colors.

I remember that someone who looked at the actual model said something like "Believe me, it's plain white." Watching the movies (especially the scenes in TMP where the lights are switched on), it seems like the different shades of blue and green are reflection or refraction effects, so the ship might be white indeed.

On the other hand, we know how very slightly differing colors may be used to imitate the above effects and add "depth" to any model. If this is so, these colors are between teal and purple, but no grey.

What I liked the most about the refit enterprise was its ivory look, almost porcelain-like.
I wish they'd revived that in the new generation of ships during the last VOY and DS9 seasons.

There's at least one scene in First Contact where the Ent-E looks really pearlescent and ivory-shiny, that's nice.

When did this person look at it? The movie model would have been repainted several times, definitly during the conversion to the Enterprise-A, and probably between every movie. I remember reading that the aztec tiles were painted differently during TMP, but when ILM got the model, they repainted it to a more monotone colour because...er...some reason to do with something.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

I think the most 'change' was given to it for TFF - I think they painted it just a flat white. Gone was the beautiful pearlescent glow from TMP.

The reason had to do with ILM's photography techniques. ILM was getting too much shine off the model for their bluescreen work and had to flatten the paint slightly so it wasn't as shiny. It was difficult for them to get clean matte lines for the effects work. Apparently the effects were done differently for TMP.

I had heard that for TMP, the Enterprise was painted about 8 slightly different shades and sheens of paint. That's what gave it the pearl effect. I believe there's some discussion about it on either the TMP SE or WOK SE DVD extras.

There's also the fact that the different aztec sections got gloss coats that were brushed in different directions to get different reflective effects.
