Somehow I never thought of that rectangular recess in ther rear (the one with the impulse engine) as being a door. I tend to think of it as just a section of the hull that can be pulled out, along with the entire impulse/fusion reactor assembly for repair work, replacement, reactor core ejection, etc. I recall that the NX-01 shuttle pods had a similar feature.
