I get bored.

Often.

So I occasionally just randomly type stuff into Google searches and see what I find.

It's probably no shocker that those searches occasionally take a Series ? bend to them.

Such searches usually only bring up Flare and MM's archive, but occasionally I'll find other allusions to it. Even people posting the stories on other sites (and thankfully being good enough people to give me credit).

Today I made a Series ? related Google search that I never had before.

Relativity-H.

And I found this.

Somebody was enough of a fan to retexture a Defiant mesh and an Excelsior mesh into the Relativity-H and the Shadow Armored Excelsior.

Needless to say I find this awesome beyond words. [Big Grin]

Intregued, I went to his website. He also has an awesome beauty shot of the Relativity-H.

If only I could get my hands on a beauty shot of the Shadow Excelsior, I could die a happy geek...

Does anybody here already know this guy? Or know somebody who knows this guy? I figured I'd check first, before I send an e-mail out of nowhere to the guy asking about a pic he finished almost a year ago.

Nope, I'm not familiar with him. I have to say, though, that I never imagined the Relativity-H to have so close a resemblance to the old Defiant... I always interpreted that to mean just the general layout of various components like the nacelles, the bridge, the impulse engines, the weapons, and the deflector. Those images just remind me of a resurfaced Defiant instead.

(I say this without any criticism towards the artwork itself -- it's certainly far, far more than I could ever manage on my own!)

Also, buried in my e-mail archives are a couple of very early WIP images of a Shadow hull-clad Excelsior. Unfortunately, I lost touch with the modeler who was doing the work, and it's very incomplete. [Frown]

I, too, would dearly love to see someone do some serious visuals of the Excelsior with its complete Shadow armor hull, as well as a more original Relativity-H...

I thought it looked like this?

Well, it is just a resurfaced Defiant, but for what it is, it's pretty close to how I imagine the coloring of the Relativity-H: Jet black hull offset by the lights from windows, nacelles, etc. Like MM said, it's certainly far more than I could ever do. I like it enough to have made it my current desktop.

The pic MMoM (you people use too many M-words in your names! [Wink] ) pointed out is what I can do with the resources available to me: MS Paint and Sharpie markers. Believe me, when I originally did this, I tried my hardest to hunt down a computer on campus that might have a decent art program on it; after all, they've got programs for every other subject. Alas, I couldn't find one. I'm still pretty happy with most of the aspects (especially the nacelles, I love how those came out), but it's obvious it's the product of inferior technology. Now that I'm out of school and making some money, I hope to afford a decent art program somewhere down the line, but the "Tiki mask" will have to do for now.

Wow. That would have been pretty nice had it been completed (although I'm not sure about the nacelles glowing pink).

So the Relativity-H is a Defiant-class? I thought it was just like the Defiant in Uberness but not the same class. Woh, shocker.

The Relativity-H is not Defiant-class. For one thing, the R-H is several orders of size bigger than a Defiant (about the same size as the R-G). For another, it incorporates a lot of Aeon/Wells elements. It resembles a Defiant in terms of hull shape, but not exactly. A recolored Defiant (like the one in this thread) gets close to my idea of what the R-H looks like, but not exactly.

If you want to get technical about it, the R-H is Relativity-class. Although the R-H was a custom-built one-of-a-kind ship in the beginning, I imagine Starfleet has built more since. I seem to remember wanting to include a line to that effect in an episode, but I can't remember if I did or not.

Nope, there's never been any mention of any other ships that look like the Relativity-H. Unless you have any plans to revive your idea of the official Star Trek: Series ? Technical Manual, that is... [Big Grin]

That's another thing I won't get to until I get a decent art program. I want the Series ? Tech Manual to look like it belongs with the TNG and DS9 ones... except that it'll make absolutely no sense. [Wink]

I'm still trying to come up with a workable design for a 29th-Century phaser rifle, given how fond the characters are of such things. Mind you, while I've been typing this I've just had a brainwave.

To complicate matters, did the evil crew of the evil Excelsior ever carry rifles? Because if they did, they'd have to be TOS-Movie-era ones (which, again either don't exist or were never seen) wouldn't they, if they came from the Excelsior's armoury? Or did they stop off and nick some more-modern ones from somewhere?

I believe the running joke for both crews was that they only carried around phaser rifles and nobody knew whatever happened to the normal phasers.

(Note to self: Include humorous explanation for lack of normal phasers if I ever get around to the Technical Manual.)

I would assume any evil phaser rifles that the evil crew of the evil Excelsior had were originally from the Excelsior's armory. However, more often than not, they were pulled out of hammerspace when the need arose ("So-and-so whipped out a phaser rifle and shot whatever.")

Simple: by the 29th century, phaser technology had gotten so miniaturized that it was impossible to see with the human eye. Therefore, gigantic carrying frames were devised so that they'd be impossible to lose track of.

That, and that pistol-sized phaser from "Future's End" looked just plain ridiculous.

In which case you're probably not going to like my rifle variant. . .

(But, OK, so that spares me at least from trying to develop a rifle based on any of the three movie phasers. Perhaps, in an in-jokey-annoying way, the altrernative could be a re-use of the MACO rifle which does after all look like a rifle-version of the EM-33 which looks like it's a rip-off of the Assault Phaser)

Well Lee, I just don't like the 29th century phaser because it seems so frikkin' HUGE! If they'd made it smaller, it would've seemed more reasonable compared to the small, sleek models introduced in First Contact. But a rifle won't have that problem because it's supposed to be huge.
