Actually, that is a practical location for the knife, providing it's carried with the handle down. Many modern combat knives come with a sheath that maintains a positive grip on the knife so it can't fall out unless it is drawn out. Some use a latch, others a strap, and others still, a well-designed sheath that holds the knife by virtue of friction alone.
See? Reading gun magazines doesn't just teach you about guns . I recommend you check your local library for a copy of "Combat Handguns", Necromancer. It's got all kinds of technical stuff about guns, knives, the law and hanguns, etc. It's a professional magazine for police, military, and bodyguards -- professionals who use guns (or at least carry them) on a daily basis.
