The images took very little time to conjure up (although the Albatross' engines did a lot of migrating before I decided where they ought to go). Most of the work went into the write-ups.
The Barn Owl was a predecessor to the Bird-of-Prey seen in Balance of Terror. The Albatross was developed as an adversary ship for use in war training exercises. It's designed to emulate the performance of the Constitution class ships that were in use around the mid 2260s.
