...turn bitmap images (.BMP's, say, from using MS Paint) into .jpeg's or .gif's?
I've been doing some radical redesigns (actually, just closer to my original pencil sketches) of my starships, but I want to change the formats after I'm finished editing them.

Usually what I do is choose "Save as" in the File menu, then the "Save as file type" box should have all the options like JPEG, GIF, etc. Choose what you want.

First: Basically, what it boils down to is that you're going to need to get a program at least slightly more advanced than MSPaint. Once you do that, it will probably allow you to save in other formats.

If you have MSPaint on Windows 98 or above it SHOULD allow you to save images at jpegs or gifs. I know my old Win95 version of MSPaint didn't do that.

Well, Win98 Paint can handle 24-bit color(!) and JPEG(!). But there's nothing like optimizing the compression. The images will either be too large or awfully compressed.
