I just received a copy of Starfleet Prototype in the mail today. I bought the copy from David Schmidt, who had a box of copies of the book that never made it to stores (or something like that). Anyways, I was looking through the book and found three ships that I had never seen before: The USS Conquest (DN 2589) class dreadnought, the USS Dahlgren (CS 2567) clas strike cruiser and the USS Valor (CE 2830) class exploratory cruiser. These three ships bare a striking resemblance to the Belknap family of ships, with the Conquest, Dahlgren, and Valor having similiar configurations to the Ascension, Belknap, and Athabaska, respectively. What I'm wondering is how come these have never been scanned and catalogued at, say, the SSDB before? I did a Google search on these ships and all I found was text references. Can anyone shed some light on this? Dave?

wasnt there some skunking about with Ships of the Star Fleet charging plagiarism to the people who were ripping off their ship designs. i think Starfleet Dynamics had to change the names (and shapes) of some of their ships because they were reprinting or representing Mastercom's designs.
All moot because i think Viacom slapped all of their asses shortly thereafter.

Well, these ships are near the back of the book, under the TacResFleet section. There are references earlier in the book to the Dahlgren, even once with the registry 2501. I would hope that was typo on Dave's part. And for the scanning, I don't know. The images might be too big for my scanner. Plus, it's a new book and the edges of the images would be in the crease, so there'd be some shading there...

Yes i found my copy of Schmidt's Dynamics, and the classes have the same names in that book, Dahlgren, etc..
theres a blurb that specifically mentions that the book has been altered from previous versions because they were using Mastercom's designs and didnt wish to plagiarize.
a few of the ships are even rough around the edges where they pasted a replacement over whatever was on the original printing plate.

I have a copy of SfD that has the Belknap-Ascension-Athabaska in it. I did some scans and I have uploaded images of the Dahlgren-Conquest-Valor. These are probably the ships you see in your copy of SfD, Mike. Like I said, very close to the Belknap-Ascension-Athabaska.

. . . which is one way of explaining why the pages are stuck together, I guess. . .

FYI: I did not plagerize - I made reference (homage?) to earlier work in order to preserve continuity - making reference also to existing publications.
Probably the same way the other author used the Enterprise...
Which I mentioned to him...
