Although you can achieve similar results with both, it simply comes down to a matter of preference. If you can acquire both programs, try them and see which you prefer. I favour Lightwave, and as such my attempts to use the quite different layout of Max caused headaches.
For an introudction to 3D, I would probably say an early version of Lightwave would be the best choice.

Yes, once you get used to a layout you can get stuck with it, I use 3DSM, then tried using a friends Truespace.... Man, what a change...
