I don't have a 360 either. Yet. I was just a guest at a friend's. Anyway, to compare, I played some Halo 2 last night on Xbox and while it certainly holds up, the popping textures were getting annoying. Think H:2 was really pushing the original Xbox hardware to its limits.
Actually at this point, other than the dramatic improvements HD capable hardware brings, there wasn't anything to set the house on fire with the beta. Like it looks and plays very similar to the older versions. Certainly some refinements are present, and, of course, new weapons and gadgets, but from 30ft away, you'd have trouble telling the difference.
I tended to like the team strategy games (Capture the Flag, King Of The Hill, Assault, etc.) over the individual Slayer (free-for-all kill everyone) games. And to that end think the Mongoose really adds a lot. I'm a fan of the new grenades and the new special weapons. The Spartan Laser, though finicky, was an instant favorite. That said, I had a hard time killing anyone with my old stand-by the Battle-Rifle and did pretty fair with the default Assault Rifle. Any high-points for you Josh?

Don't hold your breath. Halo 2 Vistas release has been one of the worst in a long while. From the poor driver support of Vista itself (That will change though) to the horrible requirements needed to run the game at decent graphics levels, to the little fuck-up in the map editor (one error from the .ass files shows one of the dev team mooning the camera.)I post on the Bungie forums frequently, and there's been nothing but bitching and whining since the game was first announced. First from little tards screaming "Mak haloo2 4 XP!!11!!11!" then the same little tards asking "Wil mi compuiiter run haloo2veesta!?!?!11!1!" The game has been delayed, recalled due to the nude pic, and delayed again, to the point where no one's happy that the game's even out at all. Not to mention the numerious bugs reported already with the Tray and Play and the graphics and options.

Bungie one of the best game developers? HA HA HA LOL! That's a laugh. No, compared to the old greats like Sierra, Maxis and Activision, Bungie is pretty sucky. They didn't even do the port of Halo 2. They delegated it to some group called Hired Gun. The only reason they're considered one of the best is Halo itself. And possibly Marathon from way back. They had little in the way of participation in the original Halo pc port which was done by Gearbox. And even then they fucked up royally on the netcode. Due mostly to Microsofts stipulation that the game had to have dial-up support.
Bungie's only claim to fame is Halo. Without it, they'd have gone under a long time ago.

But if you have to have a single claim to fame, one of the most popular titles ever from ever. One frequently credited with rescuing the dismal fortunes of the X-box consolethe sequel of which setting all sorts of records, etc.

Very true, there is something about the Halo series that made it instantly popular. But while Halo 2 wasn't a bad game, it was nowhere near as good as the original. Sales figures notwithstanding. Bungie seems to be relying on the idea that "Hey, it's Halo for fuck sakes! EVERYONE will want to buy it!" Halo 2 felt like it was riding the success of the original. And it still does with Halo 2 Vista, although just about everyone has this insane notion that Halo 2 PC is Vista exclusive for the sole purpose of selling more copies of Vista. Which, while maybe true, seems like a totally retarded idea. Who would buy a brand new operating system just to play a game. Even if it is Halo 2.

This seems like a good place to ask this. Is the Halo 2 and 3 single-player game less, well, linear than the original? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game, but it felt like I was on a rail-shooter, with only one way to go most of the time.
(BTW, I don't do multiplayer because I don't have the time, I'm on dialup, and I'd rather play with people I know.)

Halo 2 is still pretty linear in it's gameplay. There aren't many paths to chose from. Which kind of kills the replay value, if you don't take into account the fairly good story. I don't know about Halo 3, seeing as it's not out yet, but multiplay is pretty much the only thing that's been keeping these games alive. The single player is pretty much par for all console games in that you could finish it in a day or two.
