The season 7 premiere, in my opinion, was excellent. Lots of unexpected twists and turns, such as the return of Kritchkau (sp?). And the scene with an elderly Mulder dying in his bed while Cancerman looks out at the devastation being wrought by the invasion from above was spectacular.

But the tone and feel of the X-Files has changed over last season and now this season as well. Mulder and Scully are now no longer investigating the unknown when it comes to the aliens and conspiracy, we pretty much know what's going on (or at least a good part of it). The story now seems to be one of Mulder and Scully trying to stop the impending colonization.

So what did everyone think of the premiere? And of the X-Files mythology arc as of late?

To be honest, I was underwhelmed. Mulder is half-alien? What? Shouldn't these conspiricy types be a bit more concerned about, you know, their whole conspiricy being smashed and the aliens running the show? And didn't they already HAVE a vaccine?

Next week looks good, though. Some traditional wacky monster hunting.

"There. Is that brain matter?"

"No...that's ground beef."

The bit about Mulder being half alien actually comes from the episode where he went to Russia with Krychek, and was used by the Russians in their experiments for a vaccine. During the course of the experiment, Mulder was exposed to the black oil (now we know it's the virus that gestates into the alien), apparently the virus remained in him, and was somehow reactivated by Mulder seeing the alien symbols (which, granted, is a bit of a leap of reasoning at best). Mulder was apparently not a full hybrid, the alien DNA looked to be concentrated in his brain judging by the unique abilities in Mulder it triggered (and the mental disorder), and the procedure used to transplant it into Cancerman.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Cancerman now, will he inherit Mulders telepathic and remote viewing abilities? Ouch, that would make him almost unbeatable. Well, almost
